The Picture Perfect Home by Medallion

October 2010
From the Desk of Terri Norman

It's that time of year again--time to bundle up, head outdoors, and rake the leaves; to carve up pumpkins, bob for apples, and buy bowls of candy for trick-or-treaters. Autumn definitely has its perks.... but, along with those perks comes cold weather. Of course, the colder temperatures mean higher heating bills--unless you take action now to eliminate energy leaks such as those from old windows.

Leaky windows cost you money! But there's more to it than that--right now, the federal government is offering tax credits for replacing windows but that credit expires soon. That's why I wanted to bring you information about energy-efficient windows today, so that you'll have time to take action before the tax credit expires.

If you want to keep your family warm without spending a fortune on heating bills this year, read on to find out about energy-efficient windows for your home.

Sincerely,
Terri Norman

Winterize Your Home with Energy-Efficient Replacement Windows

Energy efficient replacement windows Windows bring in light, and give you expansive views of your neighborhood. But, during the winter, they also do something that's not so nice: let the heat out. That heat costs you a bundle so it's smart to keep the warm air in. One of the smartest ways to winterize your home for many years to come is installing energy-efficient windows. But not all windows are created equal--so, what do you need to know before you decide on your replacement windows?

For the tax credit, know your numbers

If you want to make sure you're eligible for the tax credit, you need to know precisely what kind of windows to look for. Windows need to have both a U Factor (the amount of heat transferred through the glass) and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (a percentage of heat gained through the glass) of .3 or less. Don't be fooled by EnergyStar® labels--though they are helpful for other projects, the EnergyStar specifications aren't an exact match to the tax credit requirements.

If you're having Medallion Security install your windows, just be sure to let us know you want to ensure you're eligible for the tax credit and we'll walk you through the window selection accordingly. (Though, of course, you'll need to check with your tax preparer for other requirements of the program.)

Energy-efficient windows save you money each month

Slider window One of the top selling points of energy-efficient windows is the way they reduce heating and cooling bills. In fact, windows are one of the biggest sources of heat loss in your house in the winter (well, unless your kids leave the front door wide open). That means you can save a lot of money by replacing older windows. Exactly how much you'll save depends on the age and efficiency of your current windows, but most experts estimate savings of around 35% per year.

Remember that although we're currently concerned with keeping our homes cozy and keeping the cold fall and winter air out, new windows will also keep your home cooler in the summer, which is why the replacements add up to year-round savings.

Replacement windows boost curb appeal

When you're considering energy-efficient replacement windows, you'll have plenty of styles to choose from. Whether you'd like an interior wood grain finish (available in oak, cherry or stainable or paintable pine) or you prefer the look of vinyl windows, you'll be able to take your pick knowing your new windows will look great and keep your home cozier.

When it comes to return on your investment, replacement windows claim one of the top spots on the Cost vs. Value report by Remodeling magazine, with real estate agents and home owners agreeing that with rising energy costs, energy-efficient upgrades like new windows are very attractive in the current real estate market. So, while the best way to enjoy your new windows is to stay in your home for the long term, it's nice to know that replacement windows are a worthwhile investment if you sell in the near future.

The biggest challenge with replacement windows is finding the right combination of U Factors and SHGCs in the style you love and that's where we come in. When you email Preston James today, he'll help you find windows that look great and that qualify for the federal tax credit. (Plus, keep reading to find out how you can save even more on your new windows.)
