How to Keep Your Home Safe this Holiday Season
It may be the "most wonderful time of the year," but it's also a time when criminals take advantage of the fact that more people are out and about than usual. That's why now's a smart time to improve the safety and security of your home. Here are some useful tips to do just that.
Add lighting
Criminals like to be invisible. At night, it's easy to lurk in the shadows, but it's much harder to hide in a brightly-lit yard. If your home doesn't have enough lighting, either boost the wattage of bulbs (if the current fixtures can handle that), or have an electrician come out and add additional fixtures. Not only will making your yard brighter make your home less attractive to theives, but it can also boost your home's curb appeal when done nicely.

Have a security door and bars installed
So often, we think of security doors and bars on the window as eyesores. That's why many of us have hesitated to have them installed in the past. But, at Medallion, we custom make all of our ironworks which means you don't have to settle for ugly to keep your family safe. Rather, we can help you create something that's attractive and well-suited to the style of your home and that will keep your home secure. Trim the landscaping
With this last year's wild weather, the yard may be looking a little wild, too! If you have bushes that have gotten overgrown, give them a trim so that they're not blocking the view of doors and windows from the street. You want your front yard to be as open and clear as possible to deter theives who may be looking for extra cover to commit their crimes.
Consider a security system
If you don't already have one, a security system can give you additional peace of mind. The signs alone have been shown to act as a deterrant to theives looking for easy targets, but, more importantly, if someone were to break into your home, a monitored alarm increases the likelihood that the criminals will be caught.
Make sure your home looks lived in
Ensure your home always looks occupied during the holiday season. If you will be away at night, lights on a timer can mimick your normal behaviors tricking would-be theives into thinking you're at home. If you'll be away, ensure mail and newspapers won't pile up and ask a neighbor to stop by and open the windows or make other changes to make it look like someone's home.
You and your family deserve to be safe this holiday season. By making some simple changes, you can make your home much less attractive to criminals.
