Easy Backyard Deck Maintenance
Summertime means spending time outside, something delicious on the grill, friends gathered around, and the kids playing on the grass. And what better place for outdoor get togethers than a backyard deck?
Decks offer (on average) an 81% return on your investment, making them one of the most cost-effective home improvements you can make (and that's before you factor in your family's enjoyment). You're smart to take great care of your deck so it continues to provide enjoyment and value, year after year.
Start with the right materials
At Medallion, we use Southern Yellow Pine so your deck will last. We also use all screws (no nails to pop out in six months), galvanized hardware, and a 2 x 8 or greater floor joist. All of this means that your deck is built to last. And that's what you should insist on, right from the start.
A deck is an investment of your hard-earned money, and you deserve to have one that will serve you for many, many years to come. That's why it's important to insist on top-quality materials and installation--both of which you'll get from Medallion.
Keep it clean
It's important to clean your deck regularly. That means sweeping it free of debris and hosing it off every month or so. Keeping it clean doesn't just help keep the deck in tip-top shape--it also helps you catch any maintenance issues right away before they are exacerbated. So, care for your deck regularly, right from the start.
Check for mildew
Because a deck is outside, especially if it's not protected with an overhang, it can get mildew, just like the north side of some houses. This is easy to treat, but it's best caught early. Simply clean the deck carefully, and then apply a waterproof sealant to keep mildew from coming back anytime soon.
Test the railings
Over time, deck railings can come loose. At Medallion, we can use vinyl railings, which require less maintenance and are really durable compared to their wood counterparts, but all railings should be checked occasionally. Try shaking the railing (carefully), and make sure it doesn't need to be tightened.
Refresh it
Every few years, you'll want to strip, stain, and seal your deck. This helps it last much longer and keeps it looking great. The process sounds more complicated than it is, and it is such a small investment when compared to all the hours of enjoyment you get from the space.
