Easy Backyard Deck Maintenance
Start with the right materials
At Medallion, we use Southern Yellow Pine so your deck will last. We also use all screws (no nails to pop out in six months), galvanized hardware, and a 2 x 8 or greater floor joist. All of this means that your deck is built to last. And that's what you should insist on, right from the start. Keep it clean
Check for mildewBecause a deck is outside, especially if it's not protected with an overhang, it can get mildew, just like the north side of some houses. This is easy to treat, but it's best caught early. Simply clean the deck carefully, and then apply a waterproof sealant to keep mildew from coming back anytime soon. 
Test the railingsOver time, deck railings can come loose. At Medallion, we can use vinyl railings, which require less maintenance and are really durable compared to their wood counterparts, but all railings should be checked occasionally. Try shaking the railing (carefully), and make sure it doesn't need to be tightened. Refresh itEvery few years, you'll want to strip, stain, and seal your deck. This helps it last much longer and keeps it looking great.
