Backyard Fences: How to Find the Fence that's Right for Your Home
These days, we have many options for enclosing our yards, and though those options give us lots of variety... it can also be overwhelming to determine which type of fencing is right for your home. So, let's consider the pros and cons.
Chain-Link Fencing
Chain-link fencing isn't a particularly attractive choice, and it doesn't provide privacy. But it does have two advantages: it's lightweight and can be put up very quickly.
It's good for industrial applications where looks aren't important and in situations where a lot of property needs to be fenced very quickly, but it generally isn't right for home use.
The other drawback of chain-link is that it's easy to climb, making it a poor choice for keeping kids in (or people out of) your yard. For your home, there are better choices available.
Wood Fencing
Wood fencing has a traditional look and comes in several different styles. From three-foot pickets to privacy styles, you can usually find a style of wood fencing that you'll like.
One of the drawbacks of wood, though, is that it requires frequent (and costly) maintenance. If you paint the fence, expect to bring out the paintbrush every few years for the laborious process of painting each picket.
Wood fences are also relatively heavy, making them more prone to falling over when the weather gets windy. If you need to replace a portion, it can be difficult to get a good match.
Another big drawback of wood is that it warps when exposed to the elements. That makes the fence crooked and can even make it more likely to fall down--requiring costly repairs.
Vinyl Fencing
Compared with wood fences, vinyl is very low-maintenance. It may need to be wiped down every year or so to clean it up, but it will never require painting or staining. Vinyl isn't susceptible to warping, either.
Vinyl fencing is also comparatively lightweight (though it's still quite substantial) which means that when built properly, it'll stay upright in the wind.
The biggest drawback of vinyl fencing in years past was that it didn't come in many styles, so you were more likely to have to compromise on looks. Fortunately, that's changed--you can now get vinyl fencing in nearly as many varieties as wood fences.
Though vinyl fencing requires more time-consuming installation than chain-link, the procedure is comparable to installing wood fencing, and since it lasts much longer, it's a smarter choice for most homes.
Which Fence Is Right for You?
Now that you know the pros and cons of the three most popular fencing materials, all that's left is for you to determine which style of fencing you like most. Other than personal preference, the two other elements to consider are homeowners' association rules (which may limit fence style, color and height) and the style of your home.
When you call Medallion, we'll help you determine which vinyl fencing option will look right with your home (for instance, cottages often lend themselves to picket-style vinyl fencing). To get your fencing pricing estimate, call us, toll-free, at 800-234-3007.
